The Role of Information Communication Technology in Improving the Wellbeing of Young Careers and Young People with a Disability or Chronic Illness.

The internet has had a profound effect on society, redefining the practice of relationships and diversifying social interactions (Rideout, 2002, Valentine & Holloway, 2002). While its initial growth resulted in a rapid transfer of knowledge and real-time information flow, the emergence of Web 2.0 creates opportunities to engage with young people who are socially and geographically isolated as a result of disability, illness, poverty and family circumstances.  In Australia, 91% of 15-24 year olds use the internet (ABS, 2007).

The internet's interactivity allows the delivery of information, health interventions and services in a variety of formats, including text-based content, audio and visual podcasts, 'serious' gaming, online forums, diagnostic screening and direct links to service providers. Furthermore, there is potential (assuming access is available) for cyberspace to assist young people experiencing marginalisation to transgress stigma and discrimination faced in their physical environments (Blanchard et al., 2007).

This poster will document the work of an ARACY ARC/NHMRC Research Network - Future Generation Seed funded collaboration established to innovatively explore the question 'What role can information and communication technologies play in promoting positive mental health among young people aged 12-25 who are carers or who live with a physical, intellectual or learning disability or chronic illness.'

This was achieved by working in partnership with young people to share knowledge and practical insights into the needs of the target group, reviewing the literature and identifying areas for further research around the potential of using the internet and related technology with the identified target groups.
